IMPORTANT UPDATE: PLEASE READ: 27.07.2022
We are sorry to say that we haven’t had as many young people enrol onto the Summer School as anticipated. As a result, we have made the difficult decision to reduce the length of the Summer School down to 2 days instead of the full week, partly out of fairness to our funders and to the different venues involved.
However, we fully intend to cram as much into these two days as possible to provide the best experience we can for those who have signed up. Having a compressed 2-day school also allows us to talk to students and see what they’d like to do (and how that gets delivered) in future. There will be plenty of exciting opportunities on the horizon, so keep your eyes peeled!
New Summer School Days: Monday 8 and Tuesday 9 August 2022.

What is it?
We’ve called it a ‘school’, but it’s not really. It does take place in summer though, so we got that bit right.
It’s actually going to be a week of jam-packed activities and arty stuff where participants get hands-on with making, creating, thinking and doing in various venues across the city.
We’re getting a load of local artists and writers in to lead workshops, discussions and activities to help you develop your creative and critical thinking skills… whilst having a lot of fun and doing stuff a little out of the ordinary.
We hope that this is an opportunity for meaningful learning, connection, confidence building and fun for young people in Beverley who have an interest in creativity and caring for the environment.
Who is it for?
Any Beverley school or college students between 14 and 19 years of age who are interested in art, writing and the environment, and want something fun to do over the summer holidays.
You don’t need to be the world’s best artist, writer, or environmental activist – just someone who enjoys being creative and cares about our planet and its future.
We’re looking to form a group of about 25 participants from across different Beverley schools and colleges.
Sounds great! What’s the plan?
Things will take place between 9.30am and 4pm each day between Monday 8 August and Friday 12 August, rounding off with a celebration event (think exhibitions, performances and food!) at East Riding Theatre on Sunday 14th August.
Activities will take place at a number of different venues in Beverley, including Beverley Treasure House, Beverley Art Gallery, Escape Rooms Beverley, East Riding Theatre – with the possibility of more venues to come….
We’re planning this as if participants take part on all of the days, but if there’s a massive interest then we may ask participants to register themselves further on a day-by-day basis. We’ll see how it goes, but we’ll keep everyone informed of any changes.
Our theme for this year’s event is the environment and we will be working with the words: CARBON BORDERS VOICES. This theme is based on a project that sprang out of a previous theme of Above Below At the Edge of the Water. Perhaps this will start a new theme?

Wednesday – ENVIRONMENT with Lauren and Tom
Thursday – ESCAPE EXTINCTION with Emily and Rob
Friday – PRODUCTION with Matt and Jay
Saturday – YOUR TIME (no planned activities with us)
Sunday – CELEBRATION with everyone!
Participants will be working towards an exhibition and performance of their work on the Sunday celebration day, with an opportunity to have their work published on The Critical Fish website – plus the chance to get more involved with the magazine.
What else do I need to know?
WHO WE ARE
Not heard of us before? That’s fine. We’re a small group of artists and creatives based in Hull and Beverley who believe it’s important that art and visual culture belongs to us all and that everyone should be welcome to write, make, think and chat about art… irregardless of their background or level of education. Spend some time having a look around our website and learn what we’re about!
ATTENDANCE
We would like participants to take part as much as possible – when you register for the Summer School, you are agreeing to take part in all sessions (as far as is reasonable) that you are booked on for. This is so places don’t go to waste but also so you can get the most out of this free creative opportunity!
REFRESHMENTS
At time of writing, we are unable to offer food and drinks throughout the week – this may change, but please be prepared to bring along a packed lunch and any drinks you require.
TRAVEL
We expect participants to make their own way to the venues. If going between venues, we can walk together as a group but participants are expected to be responsible for themselves.
ACCESSIBILITY
The Critical Fish is dedicated to being as inclusive as possible in everything we do. We are organising things with access in mind and have reserved a modest budget to support with any access needs; please note however, that unfortunately this does not extend to hiring carers or translators across the week.
Let us know of any needs in advance and we’ll do our best to support you. If you’re able to provide your own, we also welcome carers, translators and other supporters to come along and join in alongside you too!
How do I register my interest?
Please complete this Google Form in FULL. It asks you for your details, those of your parents/guardians and any access requirements you have.
If you’re under 18, we will need parental/guardian consent before we can fully register you (see below).
Information for parents, guardians and teachers
The Critical Fish team are made up of experienced educators and adhere to all safeguarding, safety and other current legislation in relation to children and young people. All our workshop and activity leads are also experienced artists and educators, and are DBS checked and insured as freelancers.
Whereas we will support the young people in our company throughout the duration of this Summer School opportunity, participants will remain free to come and go as they please and are expected to take personal responsibility for themselves, their actions and movements. We will, of course, share planned activities (including times and pick-up points) with yourselves and be mindful of their safety and wellbeing throughout the week, but if your child is under 18 please do not give your consent unless you are completely happy with this arrangement.
